Why not take part in our\u00a0 KKB deep clean<\/em>\u00a0 “spring cleans ” as part of the Kilkenny City\u00a0 \u00a0National Spring Clean events!\u00a0Our\u00a0 aim is to\u00a0 go deep<\/em> <\/strong>into the\u00a0 bushes and verges and concentrate in particular on the removal\u00a0 of\u00a0 plastics which are not biodegradable.<\/p>\n

The statistics tells how bad it\u00a0 can be on our County roads due to\u00a0 our \u201cdisposable\u201d<\/em><\/strong> society; 100 drink cans, 43 paper cups and 127 plastic bottles were\u00a0 found in a recent Kilkenny Co Co survey on just 1km of country\u00a0 roadside!\u00a0 It\u00a0 is interesting to note that no plastic bags were\u00a0 listed.\u00a0 The 15c tax on each plastic bag has been\u00a0 a success.<\/p>\n

Keep Kilkenny Beautiful did a plastic bag survey in Kilkenny City in 2000 and found over 200 discarded plastic bags\u00a0 in just one section of 1\/2km roads edge.<\/p>\n

We need the political courage to finally arrange to put a returnable 25c deposit (or more) on drink cans and plastic bottles.<\/p>\n

For \u201cpaper\u201d cups ( which also contain plastic) why niot consider a 25c tax an encouragement to use\u00a0 suddenly this “trash”\u00a0 is actually\u00a0 of value and the problem will\u00a0 disappear like the plastic bag !<\/p>\n
