Winter evening in Kilkenny

The recent heavy snow and crisp air  presents Kilkenny in a new light on the evening of the 2nd day of December 2010.  A pleasant walk  a dusk through the historic Irishtown, St Canice’s  and Black Abbey areas of the City!

The Black Abbey church founded in 1225  is the focal point of Black Abbey square and the Abbey street area.  Adjacent are elements of the medieval Kilkenny City walls and the Black Freren Gate,  which is the sole remaining Kilkenny City gate still in place.  There are wonderful walks through  the medieval streets and lanes in this historic quarter of Kilkenny City.

The Canal square and Parade comes out tops!

The Canal Square and City Parade urban areas have received a nomination  in the current RIAI Annual Irish Architecture Award ( Public Choice Award section). The Parade, our  premier public space has become a firm favourite for visitors and citizens alike.   The wide car free pedestrianised public space forms a new link between the City centre and Kilkenny Castle. The provision of bicycle stands has encouraged the use of bicycles in the City.
