TriGrandPrix Triathlon Kilkenny 2011

The TriGrandPrix  Triathlon Kilkenny took place on Saturday 23rd July 2011.  The City looked its best as  the competitors swam the river Nore through the city centre, ran in the Castle Park and river side walks, and cycled   from the Castle Park into the fertile countryside as far as Bennettsbridge to the south of the City and back.  The City Centre was crowded with visitors, the Cafes were full and the sun shone.

The Mayor of Kilkenny at the Kilkenny St Patrick’s Parade 2011.  Kilkenny has been a city since 1609 when it was given a charter. For more information, see Kilkenny400.ie

Our current mayor follows a proud tradition. There has been the position of Sovereign/Mayor in Kilkenny for many centuries. The earliest recorded Sovereign was Robert Palmer in 1282.  Since then there is an  unbroken record of the first citizen each year. In 1609 following the receipt of the City charter, the first Mayor was  Thomas Ley (until Michaelmas) and then Robert Rothe.   For two years 1655-1656 Daniel Axtell  was military governor in the city.

KKB distributes trees to Kilkenny

During March the KKB distributed a large number trees through out the city for planting by community groups, residents associations and other groups.  The  KKB wish to thank O’Loughlin Gaels GAA club for facilitating the distribution of trees from  their car park on the 12th March 2011. There was a range of tree types including Birch, wild cherry and mountain ash. The planting of these trees will add to the city amenity and will also  provide food and cover for wild life.

President Obama to visit Ireland

It was reported today that president Obama may visit Kilkenny during his official visit to Ireland in May 2011. On behalf of Kilkenny City the Keep kilkenny Beautiful Committee look forward to extending a warm welcome to President Obama.

Work is already underway in preparing Kilkenny for the 2011 National tidy Towns Competition. In 2010 kilkenny achieved a gold medal and was also awarded the title of Best large urban centre in the country.

A tomb in the historic St Canice’s Cathedral has the remains of Bishop John Kearney (c.1742–1813), who was Mr Obama’s great-great-great-granduncle. He became provost of Trinity College Dublin in 1799 and was bishop of Ossory 1806-1813. His home in Kilkenny was the historic Bishops palace which is located adjacent to the cathedral and still in use to day by the Heritage council.
