Mayor’s Massive Clean up 2011

Our  Newly installed City  Mayor David Fitzgerald has hit the ground running!  Saturday  June 25th  at 10am the Mayor’s Massive clean up commences.! All volunteers and community groups and KKB members  should meet at the Watershed, where high visibility jackets  and cleaning utensils shall be distributed.  groups will be dispatched to all areas of the city for a 1.5 hour city wide community clean up.

Participants in the Mayor’s massive clean up will be in with a chance to win a spot prize, while also helping their community.

All are welcome, come and assist  in winning the overall Tidy towns Award title  for Kilkenny this year.

Die Colles Pferdetränke
1902 hat der Tierschutzverein Kilkenny die Erstellung einer Kalksteintränke zu einem Preis von 58 Pfund und 5 Schilling in Auftrag gegeben. Die Tränke wurde von Herrn Colles, Kalkwerke Maddoxtown, angefertigt.
Einzigartig ist, dass Pferde aus dem Haupttrog und Hunde aus den drei kleineren unteren Becken trinken können.

Tidy Towns judging of Kilkenny under way

The National tidy towns 2011 competition   is currently under way. Judging of Kilkenny City is likely to commence over the next few days!

Mr Sean Leahy KKB  Chairman  urge  all in the city to make an extra effort over the next 8 week to Keep Kilkenny Beautiful!

How Tidy Towns can Contribute Positively to your Community

Nora Darcy, Keep Kilkenny Beautiful Committee member presented a paper titled “How Tidy Towns can Contribute Positively to your Community” at the Town Clerks Annual Conference 2011 which took place in Clonmel on the 12-13 of May 2011. The Conference was hosted by the IPA (Institute of Public Administration). The themes included:
– Creating great places to live, work and visit.
– Turning houses into homes.
– Keep Kilkenny Beautiful, because it is beautiful.
– Tidy towns, Creating a better community.

Litter Bug Competition 2011

The KKB Children’s 2011 art competition is called “Make a Litterbug” competition for primary (5th Class) and secondary schools (Transition Year). The competition required students to form teams of up to 3 students to build their concept of a litterbug using recycled material only. The “Bug” could be no wider than 750mm and 1500mm high. The winning entry was judged to be the “Litterbug” that best demonstrates the reduce, reuse, recycle principle. The entries were required to target their message to their own age group and consider the impact of waste on their school, community and Kilkenny.

Each school was required to choose a winner from within the entries in the school. The  winning school entry will be put on public display in the city. The overall winners won  ipod nanos for each team member.

 

 

Keep Kilkenny Beautiful by Composting

Keep Kilkenny Beautiful in association with the Environmental Awareness Officer of Kilkenny Local Authorities discussed the great benefits of home composting with shoppers in Woodie’s DIY last Saturday the 8th April.  The information stand was busy with queries of best practice and many shoppers were pleased to learn that one third of household rubbish can be easily composted.

The information stand stood beside a composting unit that Woodie’s DIY stock.  Store Manager Brendan Corr was delighted to assist the Kilkenny Tidy Towns group, KKB with this unique initiative.  Mr Corr expressed great interest from the very beginning in working in partnership with the local group and Kilkenny Local Authorities. He also explained that their qualified horticulturist is always on hand to deal with any customer composting queries.

KKB are active with regular litter picks throughout the city and liaise closely with dozens of residents associations in the city environs.  Kilkenny City fell only two points short of the national title in 2010 so this year efforts are concentrated on other competition categories like waste minimisation to boost their competition score.

Bernadette Moloney, the Environmental Awareness Officer of Kilkenny County Council was delighted to come on board with this initiative as it ties in nicely with the current national “stop food waste” campaign which has proven that average families can spend between €700-€1,000 annually on food that’s not eaten and ends up in the household bin.  Composting materials like raw vegetables, fruit, tea bags together with newspaper can divert one third of household waste from landfill so it’s a practice which is easy on the pocket and great for the environment.

The Mayor of Kilkenny at the Kilkenny St Patrick’s Parade 2011.  Kilkenny has been a city since 1609 when it was given a charter. For more information, see Kilkenny400.ie

Our current mayor follows a proud tradition. There has been the position of Sovereign/Mayor in Kilkenny for many centuries. The earliest recorded Sovereign was Robert Palmer in 1282.  Since then there is an  unbroken record of the first citizen each year. In 1609 following the receipt of the City charter, the first Mayor was  Thomas Ley (until Michaelmas) and then Robert Rothe.   For two years 1655-1656 Daniel Axtell  was military governor in the city.

National Spring Clean Launch 2011

KKB has  launched the National Spring Clean campaign 2011 with all of the city stakeholders.

A major clean up campaign has already commenced through out our  City. Regular clean ups are being organised by the KKB in conjunction with local residential and community groups.

All groups who require assistance or support in relation to organising their own clean ups can contact the KKB for advice and help. The KKB also thank the large number of volunteers  on our clean up Kilkenny text list who respond to our regular calls for assistance.

Earth Hour Kilkenny

The WWF Earth Hour was celebrated  in the Kilkenny communities of Melville Heights and Dukesmeadows on Saturday  the 26th March at 8.30 p.m. A large crowd of residents and visitors turned out to launch sky lanterns  into the night sky. The evening was still and cloudless.  The neighbouring houses has their lights turned off. The launched lanterns formed a constellation of star like globes rising into the still evening. The event was organised by Kilkenny Local Authorities Environmental section  in conjunction with Keep Kilkenny Beautiful and promoting a sustainable future in harmony with nature  for all in our City.
