Congratulations to all on the recent Fairways community clean up
Local residents were joined by KKB members and the Kilkenny Baha’i community in a community clean up. Many hands made light work. A wonderful day with plenty of sun allowed for a big spring clean to be undertaken. “Working Together, Winning Together”!
Celebrating 60 years tidy towns competition
Keep Kilkenny Beautiful attended the celebrations of 60 years tidy towns competition which took place recently in Phoenix Park in Dublin. A tree was also planted to commemorate the winning by Kilkenny city of the National award for a second time in 2014.
Quacking start to spring in Kilkenny
One of our City Centre Nore ducks has been quack off the mark with a new family! We are very fortunate to have a large number of ducks in the city centre, they are a great hit with young and old!

Deep clean under way!
Why not take part in our KKB deep clean “spring cleans ” as part of the Kilkenny City National Spring Clean events! Our aim is to go deep into the bushes and verges and concentrate in particular on the removal of plastics which are not biodegradable.
The statistics tells how bad it can be on our County roads due to our “disposable” society; 100 drink cans, 43 paper cups and 127 plastic bottles were found in a recent Kilkenny Co Co survey on just 1km of country roadside! It is interesting to note that no plastic bags were listed. The 15c tax on each plastic bag has been a success.
Keep Kilkenny Beautiful did a plastic bag survey in Kilkenny City in 2000 and found over 200 discarded plastic bags in just one section of 1/2km roads edge.
We need the political courage to finally arrange to put a returnable 25c deposit (or more) on drink cans and plastic bottles.
For “paper” cups ( which also contain plastic) why niot consider a 25c tax an encouragement to use suddenly this “trash” is actually of value and the problem will disappear like the plastic bag !

Congratulations to Legacy High school marching Band from Colorado, USA, who gave a great display in front of our historic Kilkenny Castle.
Tree planting completed at Lacken walk
Congratulations to all who attended the tree planting near the board walk at Lacken, walk. many hundreds of trees have been planted including many native Irish species. the weather was damp but this made for good planting conditions with the ground soft and receptive to bare root tree slips. In particular we thank Dan of Tree Services Ireland who coordinated the event and whose aim is to plant two trees for every one tree removed!

River Nore rises to new levels
Over the last number of weeks we have seen the river Nore rise and rise. The Nore still quite a wild river with many tree-lined natural banks. When the river rises the floodplains turn into lakes. Trees along the riverbank where undermined and weakened are washed down the river. The City boardwalk was just above the flood level.
