Congratulation to the Probation office, supported by KKB and Kilkenny Co Co for the wonderful re-presentation of all three of our historic wells. There has been cleaning , painting, weeding, trimming undertaken and some planting also put in place. Further planting will need to await winter rains. A traditional whitewash was used giving a brilliant white finish.

Fruit blossoms in Kilkenny City
Throughout Kilkenny our many pear and apple community orchards are flowering in colourful whites and pinks. The wild cherry has already flowered. We look forward to the fruit later in the year. Additional orchard and fruit tree planting continues each year at new locations and existing trees are pruned. Attractive orchards can be seen at various locations and estates through out our City. Examples can be seen at Kilkenny castle Park, Waterford Rd. and Bennettsbridge rd. Along the main ring road there is a variety of fruit trees planted interspersed among the overall planting.
Deep clean under way!
Why not take part in our KKB deep clean “spring cleans ” as part of the Kilkenny City National Spring Clean events! Our aim is to go deep into the bushes and verges and concentrate in particular on the removal of plastics which are not biodegradable.
The statistics tells how bad it can be on our County roads due to our “disposable” society; 100 drink cans, 43 paper cups and 127 plastic bottles were found in a recent Kilkenny Co Co survey on just 1km of country roadside! It is interesting to note that no plastic bags were listed. The 15c tax on each plastic bag has been a success.
Keep Kilkenny Beautiful did a plastic bag survey in Kilkenny City in 2000 and found over 200 discarded plastic bags in just one section of 1/2km roads edge.
We need the political courage to finally arrange to put a returnable 25c deposit (or more) on drink cans and plastic bottles.
For “paper” cups ( which also contain plastic) why niot consider a 25c tax an encouragement to use suddenly this “trash” is actually of value and the problem will disappear like the plastic bag !
Tree planting completed at Lacken walk
Congratulations to all who attended the tree planting near the board walk at Lacken, walk. many hundreds of trees have been planted including many native Irish species. the weather was damp but this made for good planting conditions with the ground soft and receptive to bare root tree slips. In particular we thank Dan of Tree Services Ireland who coordinated the event and whose aim is to plant two trees for every one tree removed!
River Nore rises to new levels
Over the last number of weeks we have seen the river Nore rise and rise. The Nore still quite a wild river with many tree-lined natural banks. When the river rises the floodplains turn into lakes. Trees along the riverbank where undermined and weakened are washed down the river. The City boardwalk was just above the flood level.
Winter bedding and colour
The colder winter days brings new work for our many residents associations with the cleaning of planted areas. Beds where possible have a variety of sustainable plants that give colour all year round. These need to be weeded, the plants trimmed back, or in many cases divided and replanted elsewhere. Some winter colour is add with primroses and violas. The robin, a gardeners friend in the winter stands by, ready to pick up any tasty morsels which remain after the work.
Savour Kilkenny
Hurricane Ophelia undertakes tree felling in Kilkenny City!
Keep Kilkenny Beautiful has been undertaking extensive tree planting through out our City over many years.
We now have to commence the task of reviewing the damage caused by Ophelia. With many trees still in leaf there has been some damage. A tree replacement programme will be undertake during the winter tree planting season to replace damaged trees.
