Poop off our pavements!

Congratulations to all who took part in  our poop off our pavements promotional   on the Canal Walk and at McDonagh Junction shopping centre.  KKB had a great time meeting all of the dog owners and their wonderful dogs. It is great to see that all  want a wonderful environment to walk in Kilkenny City  with  their dogs and  that they support the scooping of poop to Keep Kilkenny Beautiful.

A handy poop bag holder was also distributed as were poop off our pavement stickers and sustainable poop bags.

A number of talking lampposts have also appeared along the main walks through out Kilkenny  to  reminding all regarding the need to scoop the poop and Keep Kilkenny Beautiful for all.

Nore Dragon Paddlers Collecting Litter and international Awards!

Nore Dragon Paddlers overall European Environmental Award

On the 16th of October, the Nore Dragon Paddlers were awarded a “Hero’s in the Community Award” from Keep Kilkenny Beautiful for their  continuous environmental contribution on the river Nore along with the Kilkenny Aqua Canoe Club, KACC.

This involved regular litter picks on the river whilst out on the water . As a result of this great achievement, the president of the Irish Dragon Boat Association, Julie Doyle, nominated the Nore Dragon Paddlers  for the Environmental Award at the European Dragon Boat Federation Forum (30th of November – 2nd of December )  in Seville, Spain. We are delighted to announce that not only did the Nore Dragon Paddlers make the final, but they  actually won the award!

The award ceremony was held on Saturday 1st November in Seville and was attended by representatives of the dragon boat community from 16 Nations including Ireland.

Great weather to savour a green sustainable Kilkenny

Savour Kilkenny has introduced new green initiatives to  minimise the  environmental impact of the festival with  waste minimisation and also raising  environmental awareness for stall holders and visitors. This includes food waste bins,  (for  cooked /  raw food) in addition general waste bins, compostable packaging, cardboard and newspaper. Reusable shopping bags are also available. This green initiative will divert food waste from landfill and instead the waste will be composted and converted into a usable product. Kilkenny CoCo  and  Savour encourage festival goers to separate their waste into compostable and general waste. visitors can refill their water bottles at provided water points  reducing the need for plastic bottled water.  Visitors are encouraged to  walk, cycle, car pool to get to events which are mostly centered on the City area within easy access.

Savour Kilkenny City during the Halloween Bank Holiday Break. There is plenty to see!

St Johns Church, John Street,  the bee friendly wildlife garden is to the side developed as part of the all Ireland pollinator plan.

Kilkenny Orchards get a summer brush up

Many thanks to the many Statestreet Bank Volunteers who have  given  our  Waterford rd community orchard  a summer brush up.

Keeping Kilkenny Beautiful  does not happen by itself. Our City is beautiful  because of the voluntary effort of many through out the year.  This community orchard is also has an  attractive seating area.

The fruit trees are vert suited to  pollinators earlier in the year and  the fruit  in August /September is delicious to enjoy.

A fitting  county emblem which will also raise the  importance of bees as pollinators. KKB works each year to improve the range of honey and bumble  bee friendly planting throughout our city.

River Nore clean up

Wednesday 8th August 7pm at Canal Walk slip will see Kilkenny Sub Aqua Club (KSAC); Keep Kilkenny Beautiful (KKB) & Kilkenny County Council (KCC) coming together to sweep the city section of the River Nore to clear it of as much waste items as possible. Volunteers from the three organisations are working together to make the best impact as possible. This partnership has worked well over many years and efforts will go toward KKB’s Kilkenny’s submission to the National Tidy Towns Competition 2018.

The current water levels are historically low and this may assist with material that is lodged in areas hard to reach in “normal” years flow, said Lorcan Scott PRO with KSAC. The River Nore is a Special Area of Conservation and the clean-up should enhance conditions for fish and mammals species moving along the river.

Kilkenny city is blessed to have such a recreational and visual asset and as with all urban waterways the Nore can receive waste from a range of sources from excitable party goers to the inconsiderate members of the public.

This exercise will also have the added benefit of removing any potential hazard to divers required in any Search and Recovery activity in the Nore city section.

KSAC and KKB wish to thank Kilkenny County Council for their offer to take any resultant waste for appropriate disposal.

Extreme dry spell in Kilkenny City

Keep Kilkenny Beautiful Awards 2018.

Update due to extreme dry conditions in Kilkenny City:

KKB has taken the decision  to cancel  the Private Gardens awards element of our Kilkenny City Annual  Awards Competition for   2018. This is due to the unprecedented dry spell here in Kilkenny.  Irish water has requested all to  conserve water and there is also  the requirement to observe a  hose pipe ban currently.  All other award categories  are not impacted.

The Private Gardens Awards  will be reinstated again in 2019.
