M9 Motorway completion diverts traffic away from historic Kilkenny City

The official opening of the last section of the M9 motorway took place on the 9th September 2010. The Keep Kilkenny Beautiful Committee were represented at the ceremony by  Chairman Sean Leahy, Hon. Secretary Elaine Bradshaw and PRO Peter Bluett. The completion of the road diverts heavy traffic away from the historic Kilkenny City. It will also allow  for   safe  access to Kilkenny  via a c. 4 km access road directly from the Motorway to our City ring road.

The colour in the city’s roundabouts can now be appreciated.  the Ring road is a blaze of colour with each roundabout themed  so that each is a unique experience. Roundabouts are also signed to aid orientation. the ring road forms a green parkway extending from the Waterford rd to the Castlecomer road. sections of the ring road have also been planted with wild flowers. The extensive city pedestrian and cycle way network  has been completed along much of the route.

The roundabout planting also includes trees and permanent planting to provide colour through out the year.  Extensive tree planting has taken place all along the city Ring road, providing screening and cover.

An anti litter week  titled “Don’t Rubbish our Heritage” took place in Kilkenny City as part of  Heritage Week 2010.

On Friday 27th of August we had extra cleaning help from Sheamus an enthusiastic street cleaner  and his  fox.    Old and young alike were beguiled by the smart fox and silver tongued street cleaner. We thank   Bui Bolg street performers who  circulated High Street and St Kieran Street  highlighting  the importance of not throwing rubbish on the street and not stubbing cigarettes.

Black Abbey Quarter of Kilkenny.

The Black Abbey church founded in 1225  is the focal point of Black Abbey square and the Abbey street area.  Adjacent are elements of the medieval Kilkenny City walls and the Black Freren Gate,  which is the sole remaining Kilkenny City gate still in place.  There are wonderful walks through  the medieval streets and lanes in this historic quarter of Kilkenny City.
